CHAPTER 48
BRYCE
I almost jumped out of my skin. Mr. Ashworth stood in the doorway, staring at us like we had just double-faulted on match point. He had thinning hair and his middle was round. He had an angular, birdlike face, like he could peck your eyes out. It was like looking into the ocean, his eyes were so blue.
I imagined him bossing his workers and yelling at contractors, but as hard as I tried I couldnât see him playing with his kids or their toys.
He held up a towel. âI heard you were hurt, young lady.â
Ashley nodded and looked at her ankle. I looked at her ankle. Her ankle was becoming a lot more interesting now that the guy who owned the office was in the room. I couldnât stop staring at her ankle.
âShe really twisted it,â I said.
To my surprise, he didnât kick us out or yell at us or even mention the snooping again. He slipped the towel under Ashleyâs foot. He had to know the ice would melt and the water would stain his expensive leather chaise. But he didnât seem to care. He just lifted her ankle and pressed it a couple of places.
She winced.
âThat hurt?â
âA little.â
âKeep ice on itâ20 minutes on, 20 minutes offâuntil tomorrow. Youâll probably be back on the court next week.â
I wanted to exit the computer program and apologize, but before I could say anything he moved to the door. âIâll drive your sister home. Weâll keep her ATV until you can pick it up.â
I helped Ashley to his truck. Maddox put our stuff in the back and waved as they pulled out.
âGuess weâll have to finish this on the country-club courts,â Maddox said.
One of the garage doors was open, and what I saw inside stopped me in my tracks. An open bag of grass killer.
âForget something?â Maddox said. He flicked a button, and the door silently closed.
âJust heading home,â I said.
